Mark Flanders & Joan Ellison in 1939

Mark Flanders & Joan Ellison in 1939
Featuring Jennifer Heemstra on piano
Sunday October 15 at 7 PM
Mark Flanders and Joan Ellison come to Nighttown from their home in 1939. They'll be taking the streetcar up from the Hotel Hollenden to show us just how songs of the Golden Age of radio, talkies and 78s are sung back where they come from, as well as some of those smart radio adverts and jingles they've been hearing on their new Philco table-model radio. They've asked pianist, Jennifer Heemstra, to join them, fresh from her apprenticeship with the great pianists from Tin Pan Alley and the RKO and Warner Brothers sound stages.
In their other lives in the present, Oberlin Conservatory grad Joan has been a featured soloist at Severance Hall with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra (she will repeat with the Pops this coming New Year's Eve), and charmed the critics with her appearances as Julie Jordan in Carousel, Lizzie Curry in 110 in the Shade, and Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, as well as appearing in the opera, The Turn of the Screw, with New York City Opera diva, Lauren Flanigan. Mark has tap-danced and sung onstage at the Palace Theatre, the Statler Hotel Terrace Room, and Cain Park, and played Prince Escalus in Romeo and Juliet at the Ohio Theatre. Playing the gala re-opening of Higbee's Silver Grille with Joan completed his list of vintage nightspot performances.
Jennifer got her time-machine wings from the player piano in her childhood home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Having received her Master's degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, she has been heard on WCLV Radio, and with Cleveland Opera, Lyric Opera Cleveland, Great Lakes Theatre Festival and many other ensembles.
Join us for this intoxicating trip back to a time when Bing and Judy ruled the air waves and Gershwin dazzled at the ivories.
Don't miss the trip back in time to 1939 with the versatile and talented vocalists Mark Flanders and Joan Ellison, and the facile piano of Jennifer Heemstra live at Nighttown on Sunday, October 15th.
